3 exercises to escape from stress

A few weeks ago we saw that stress has different ways of revealing itself. When one experiences a stressful situation, the first reaction is to get out of the situation. But this is not always possible. It is often much more effective to deal directly with our stressful state, that is to say, our behavior towards this situation. Here are three exercises that will help you escape the state of stress in order to look more serenely for the solution to the situation that is troubling you.

1- Sensory curiosity. Close you eyes and draw your attention to all the surrounding sounds: breathing, air conditioning, a corridor or a street. With each new sound, your brain will want to focus exclusively on this new information. Fight against this tendency by taking into account the most sounds possible at the same time. Once this becomes simpler, add the sense of touch. Feel the weight and texture of the fabrics you wear or materials you touch. Whenever you feel that your brain is fixed on a particular sensation, force yourself to return to a more global perception. You can then add the sense of sight by practicing in the same manner. The brain is limited in the amount of information it can process simultaneously. This exercise helps the brain to saturate in information to favor the activation of the prefrontal zone synonymous with serenity.

2 – The first day on Earth. Close your eyes again and after a few deep breaths, focus on the sounds around you. Listen to them as if you have never heard them before. The pitch of a voice, the vibration of a fan, everything must seem surprising. Open your eyes and look at the room where you’re standing. As if it were your first day on earth and you were untouched by experiences, let your curiosity run free. An object, a smell, a device, everything must seem curious to you in terms of shape, weight and utility. After 2 to 3 minutes this exercise helps anchor you in the present moment, activates your ability to stand back and free you from the anxiety of an anticipated stressful situation.

3 – The advantage of inconveniences. During stressful situations, we have seen that our thoughts and feelings are strongly impacted. Fear of failure is stressful to the point that it sometimes leads us to adopt a behavior that we normally would want to avoid. It is therefore vital to settle down and make a reasoned review of the situation. On a sheet of paper, draw four columns. In the first column, list all the benefits of success. Do not censor yourself, instead, write whatever comes to mind. Similarly, in the fourth column, list the drawbacks associated with failure. Then in the second column indicate the drawbacks of success. Think of the learning experiences that you will miss out on, or the time you won’t have for other things. You will see that after a few seconds of reflection, the words listed will put the potential benefits of success into perspective. Finally, note the benefits of failure in the third column. This exercise will activate the areas of the brain related to logical thinking and allow you to accept and put into perspective the risk of failure.
