This quote reminds us immediately of one of the three pillars that drive us: optimism. We are all more or less sensitive to negative emotions. And this sensitivity will gradually build the image that we have of the world. A world that will either become a source of joy or of danger over the course of our experiences.
But we can also learn to question how we feel, to think that the glass is half full rather than half empty, to see opportunity rather than risk, and to prepare for any good surprise rather than always imagining the worst.
This is what Nelson Mandela reminds us to do with the quote: “remember to smile,” to better cope, because you’ve earned it; to forget for a few minutes what you have lost and enjoy what you have gained.
